Common Pests - Cockroaches

Cockroaches can be major pests in offices, hospitals, restaurants, warehouses and buildings with food-handling areas. They secrete a substance which can stain surfaces and produce bad odours. Not only are they inconvenient but they are also health risks. Cockroaches spread bacteria, can cause allergies and even asthma.

Cockroaches Lifecycle

  • A cockroach has three stages during its life cycle: egg, nymph and adult.

  • Adults lay eggs contained within dark-colored egg cases (size and shape of a dry kidney bean).

  • Depending on the species, an egg case contains between 16 – 50 eggs.

  • Eggs hatch into young cockroaches called nymphs, that are more numerous than adults.

Signs of Cockroach infestation

  • You See a Cockroach: This may seem obvious. However, many people see one roach and believe that it’s just an isolated incident. Cockroaches are typically not loners. If you see one, there is a big chance that there are many others.

  • Spot Droppings: Cockroaches leave droppings behind just about everywhere that they go – a tiny brown or black stain. They typically leave their droppings in corners, under dark areas like the refrigerator or stove, as well as on the top of cabinets.

  • Egg Casings: If you see egg casings then it is likely that the eggs have already hatched. Each casing can hold up to 50 eggs. So, it is imperative to act quickly.
